PREREQUISITES:

In order to take this course, the student must:
  • Be drug-free
  • Currently work in an agency/facility licensed by DIA
  • If employed in a certified nursing facility, student must be employed for at least 6 months in their current sponsoring facility.
    The facility sponsors the student by allowing them to complete the clinical experience and must fill out a facility sponsor form.
  • If employed in a residential or related type of agency licensed by the DIA, student must still fill out and complete the Facility sponsorship/recommendation form.
    Agencies/facilities licensed by DIA are: Long Term Care (LTC), Assisted Living Programs (ALP), Residential Care Facilities (RCF), Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF), Intermediate Care Facilities for the Intellectually Disabled (ICF-10), Psychiatric Medical Institutions for Children (PMIC), Psychiatric Medical Institutions (PMI).

Medication Manager is an approved 20-hour course from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. (DIA). This course consists of 17 classroom hours (the curriculum encompasses the 6-hour Prepare to Care-CORE Module and 11 hours of specific Medication Manager curriculum). The remaining 3 hours Clinical/Lab hours will be completed with the RN in your facility.

Please note that 100% attendance is mandatory for this class. If your facility does not have an RN for the Clinical/Lab portion, you may contract with the DMACC RN for an additional fee. Please let us know prior to the class starting so we can make arrangements.

The purpose of this course is to prepare individuals to safely administer or supervise self-administration of non-parental medications in a Residential Care Facility of 15 or fewer beds, an Assisted Living Program, or other community-based settings such as Supervised Apartment Living or Supported Community Living Arrangements.

Emphasis is placed on safely administering medications or supervising the self-administration from a prescription bottle and observing for obvious reactions to medications.

All students must meet the Iowa Community College Core Performance Standards.

IBON #22 Prepares LPNs/RNs to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy in a licensed skilled nursing facility, end-stage renal dialysis, or hospital.

This course is designed to prepare the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy, using a peripheral intravenous catheter, a midline catheter, and a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line), in a licensed hospital, a nursing facility and a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit as identified in 655 IAC Chapter 6. Primary emphasis is placed on the specialized skills needed to provide intravenous therapy related to the expanded scope of the licensed practical nurse for clients aged 12 or older and for clients who weigh 80 pounds or more.

Who Can Take This Course:

  • Have documentation of 1040 hours of practice as a licensed practical nurse; be practicing in a licensed hospital, a nursing facility, or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit whose policies allow the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy.

To be eligible to enroll in the course as an RN:

  • The registered nurse must hold a current unrestricted Iowa license to practice as a registered nurse.

This course will increase your knowledge and competency through training to become a State qualified CNA Instructor. RNs will be trained not only in the principles of adult learning but will be given the opportunity to increase their teaching competency as they lead and teach students through the state-approved nurse aide curriculum.

 Pre-Requisites:

  • Must be a Registered Nurse (RN), with 2 years of RN experience.
  • One year of which has to be Long term Care (LTC)experience, or the one year LTC is waived if teaching in a program where the Program Coordinator meets the One year of LTC State Guideline.
  • Need to bring a copy of the curriculum you will be using to teach from.  No curriculum copies will be issued.

The Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON) put new rules into place effective September 1, 2019 for nurses who are reactivating their license after a period of inactivity in any jurisdiction for five years or more. Please note, there may also be other circumstances when the IBON requires a nurse refresher course to be taken.

The Nurse Refresher course is designed for nurses returning to the healthcare field and will assist in meeting the requirements for RN License Reactivation in the State of Iowa. (For other States, please consult with your Board of Nursing)

For full license reactivation the participant will need to complete both Nurse Refresher RN Part 1 and the Nurse Refresher RN Part 2 courses successfully.

  • The primary goal of the two-part Nurse Refresher-RN course is to assist inactive registered nurses to review and update their nursing knowledge and skills, and gain confidence returning to practice.
  • A practicing or currently registered nurse who is NOT inactive and desires to update their nursing knowledge and earn Nursing Contact Hours may also take this course and may only choose to take the Part 1 course. Please check with the IBON as to your status and requirements.

The Nurse Refresher RN Part 1 Course and the Part 2 Course have each been approved for 40 Nursing Contact Hours, through DMACC IBON Provider #22.

The Nurse Refresher-RN Part 1 is designed to be a 16-week online learning web based course. Course requirements include:

  • You will need to have regular and reliable internet
  • You will need a computer and access to it, in order to complete this course.
  • The course is taught through the Canvas Web based learning platform.
  • Assignments and learning will be completed through weekly reading, discussion boards, quizzes, and other methods as assigned.
  • A final course percentage grade of 78% or higher will be equivalent to a passing grade.
  • You will receive an E-Book Registration Code once class begins for your textbook access
  • You will also receive two letters from DMACC giving you your DMACC Student ID number and access to your DMACC Email address. You will use your DMACC credentials to log into the MY DMACC Web Based Learning system.

The Nurse Refresher-RN Part 2 is designed to be a face-to-face clinical experience that will be arranged in collaboration with the DMACC teaching faculty and contracted clinical sites.  Some Course Requirements include:

  • You will need to have regular and reliable internet
  • You will need a computer and access to it, in order to complete this course.
  • The course utilizes the Canvas​ Web based learning platform.
  • You must have successfully completed the DMACC Nurse Refresher-Part 1 Course, before you can take this course.
  • You will work with the faculty liaison to set up the clinical partnership and preceptor experience in an acute care setting.
  • You will work with the IBON to acquire a limited authorization to practice, in order to complete the required clinical experience. 
  • You will work scheduled shifts that consist of 8-12 hour shifts (may include days, evenings, nights or weekends) these are scheduled in advance and in coordination with the clinical preceptor at your site.
  • You as the student will develop learning objectives, complete clinical time log and weekly journal.
  • You will also collaborate with the DMACC teaching faculty and preceptors for your formative and summative clinical evaluations and will provide a written summary of the learning that was achieved during the clinical experience.
  • 80 hours of Supervised Clinical is required.
  • Your DMACC Instructor will serve as your resource and guide throughout this process
  • You will have online assignments to submit.

 A Phlebotomist is a healthcare professional who draws blood from patients for diagnostic medical laboratory tests. Most Phlebotomists are employed in hospitals and blood collection facilities. You will also find them in the lab processing specimens and working with the lab equipment. This is a great career choice for someone who really enjoys to work with people. ​This course introduces students to the basic knowledge and skills to be able to complete scuba certification. It consists of two main phases: Knowledge development (independent online study with in-person discussions) that include safety procedures, pressure changes and the human body, and basic skills overview. Confined water dives (indoor heated pool) where students will be taught and practice basic scuba and snorkel skills. After successful completion of this course students will be ready to take the third step towards a lifelong scuba certification by completing 5 open water dives at a location of their own choosing. Students are required to provide their own mask, snorkel, fins and boots. Physical requirements - Students must be able to complete 200 yards of uninterrupted swim any stroke with no time limit and be able to swim 45 yards under water. General health requirements - No invasive medical procedures at least six months prior. Students will be required to pay $100 to the instructor for the textbook and Scuba certification costs.
